Arsenal face Catalan competition for Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay-Gundogan-ManCity

Manchester City’s midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could be leaving the club this summer after (six years) being an outstanding signing for Pep Guardiola.

The German midfielder’s contract would be expiring next summer but there have been more likelihood of his exit this summer. There hasn’t been an offer to extend his dwindling contract despite having a season left hence, Man City would be willing to cash in on the German International midfielder rather than losing him on a free next season.

With the lack of information about his extension, several teams are alert to the situation. Gundogan won’t be short of options as the transfer window approaches.

Barcelona has already registered an interest in the German considering the similarities in football style between Pep Guardiola and Xavi, both Barcelona products.

Arsenal is another strong name on the list of suitors. However, Arsenal’s interest can only be solidified with a Champions League qualification, though that looks to be unlikely as the Gunner’s 0 – 3 loss to Newcastle dented their hope of the UCL qualification, leaving their fate in the hands of the Spurs.

Missing out on some important games due to injury has left Arsenal with no quality replacement for the Ghanaian Captain Thomas Partey. The Ghanian never had a worrying injury layout while he was with Atletico Madrid but since joining the Gunners, he has had multiple absences due to injury.

Lokonga and Elneny have stepped in to replace Partey but none have been as highly technical as the Ghanian hence, Gündoğan’s addition will have a much quality depth in the midfield, and considering the German’s ability to play across several positions in the middle of the park, Arteta would be yearning to secure Gündoğan’s service this summer.
