Arsenal plotting move to sign Raheem Sterling from Man City?

Sterling-Arsenal

Premier League side Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Raheem Sterling from Man City. The English winger has dropped down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium and is no longer an automatic pick in Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up.

According to reports from the Daily Star, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of Sterling and is hoping to get a move for the star forward over the line in the summer. Sterling previously worked alongside Arteta when the Spaniard was part of Guardiola’s coaching staff at Man City. Hence, he knows the player’s attributes and qualities.

Sterling has just over 20 months left on his current deal with Man City and it’s unlikely that he will sign an extension. Man City signed Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in the summer for £100 million and the rise of Phil Foden has also put Sterling’s position at the club in jeopardy.

Even Riyad Mahrez has been preferred over Sterling off late. Guardiola has used the former Liverpool winger sparingly this season, suggesting that his time at City could be numbered.

With the lack of game time, Sterling is now expected to leave Man City in the summer, in search of regular football elsewhere. The 26-year-old has been linked with a few clubs across Europe and City’s domestic rivals Arsenal are also monitoring Sterling’s situation at the club.

Last month, Guardiola informed Sterling that he will need to fight his way back into the starting line-up.

Reports suggest that Sterling wanted a new contract extension and a £50k-a-week pay rise on his current £300,000-a-week deal, which expires in 2023. However, Man City are likely to sell Sterling in the summer rather than offer him that lucrative contract extension.

Sterling joined Man City from Liverpool in the summer of 2015 on a £44 million deal, with a further potential £5 million in add-ons. At Man City, Sterling has won three Premier League titles, five League Cups, and one FA Cup so far.

Meanwhile, Arteta has endured a mixed spell in charge of Arsenal since taking over at the Emirates Stadium in 2019.
He managed to seal an FA Cup in his first season at the helm before limping to a disappointing eighth-placed finish last time around.

This season, Arsenal started off horrendously but are now unbeaten in five games across all competitions.
