Premier League 2018/19: Alex Iwobi needs to step-up

Alex Iwobi has now been in Arsenal’s squad since last three seasons and its time now for the academy boy to prove his worth at the big stage. Alex Iwobi needs to step up this campaign, if he wishes to be an integral part of Arsenal for years ahead.

Alex Iwobi can play in both the flanks; he can also be used as an attacking midfielder for the sake of the side. Alex Iwobi has scored 3 goals and assisted in 6 goals for the Gunners in all competitions last season. The Nigerian made 26 appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League in 2017/18.

Alex Iwobi made his Arsenal debut in a League Cup match against West Brom in 2013-14 season. The academy boy signed a new contract with the Gunners at the beginning of 2015-16 season. Since then, Alex Iwobi has made 98 appearances scoring 9 goals so far in all competitions. His performance has been inconsistent throughout his Arsenal career and he needs to work on that next season.

Unai Emery likes to play with a 4-3-3 formation which needs quality wingers. Arsene Wenger has tried Pierre Emerick Aubameyang on the left, but Aubameyang is not a natural winger. Aubameyang is more suitable at the centre forward position for the Gunners and Unai Emery will also try to use Aubameyang in his preferable position to get the best out of him. So, the Gunners badly need a quality winger in their squad. If the club management are unable to land a top class winger in the summer transfer window, Alex Iwobi needs to improve his performance in the next season.

Alex Iwobi lacks the composure in his game-play. His finishing is not up to the mark level. Sometimes, the winger runs vaguely with the ball and delays to give the final pass. Alex Iwobi is also not the strongest player in the pitch to retrieve the ball from the feet of the opponent players. So, he needs to improve this qualities under the management of Unai Emery in the next season. Otherwise his ball control ability and passing accuracy is quite good. Alex Iwobi certainly has the potential to be an asset for the Gunners in the future. He just needs to live up the expectations of the fans in the next season.
