Arsenal legend Paul Merson has revealed that he would be surprised if the Gunners decide to make a bid for Fulham star defender Ryan Sessegnon in the upcoming summer transfer window worth £40 million.

There is no denying that Arsenal needs to sign a few top quality players in the summer transfer window to bolster their squad for next season. With just four months to go until the window opens up, Unai Emery will be planning his decisions on which players to recruit.

A few players will be leaving Arsenal in the summer and Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal could be on the exit door at the Emirates Stadium as his contract expires at the end of this season. Therefore, Arsenal needs a new left back at the club to provide competition for Sead Kolasinac and have been keeping tabs on Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham.

The 18-year-old scored twice and assisted six times so far this season in England’s Premier division but his club is going to be relegated this term.  Given Sessegnon’s age and potential, he could be picked up by one of the top clubs in the country and Arsenal are monitoring his situation.

But ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson has stated that he wouldn’t think any club would be willing to pay £40 million for his services because of a rather underwhelming campaign this season. Sessegnon was incredible for Fulham when they earned promotion into the Premier League but wasn’t able to adapt as well to the intensity in the Premier League at Craven Cottage.

And Merson opened up in his rather honest view and said , “I’d be surprised [if someone paid £40m for Sessegnon], I think last season, you would have got £40 million for him. Not playing in the Premier League. Potential. Very good in the Championship. He is has come up and if I am being honest, he has looked like he doesn’t feel like he should be there. He looked a bit lost sometimes. And I know he’s only 18 and he’s a kid, but I don’t think he has shown anything all season.”
