STYLE OF PLAY

Mohamed Elneny is a sharp passer and can surely be a holding midfielder. He is not someone who comes into limelight very often, he is a simple player. But playing simple is the toughest way to play. He is a great passer and a team player giving Arsenal dept in the midfield. Elneny is the box to box midfielder and who play with intelligence and technical know how.

Mohamed is also a physical presence in the middle of the park. At his time in Basel, Elneny made a name for accurately shooting from the distance, but he is yet to prove his power distance shooting quality.

Despite being a physical, Mohamed Elneny lacks aerial attributes but it doesn’t come into play very often in the midfield.

COMING UP THE RANKS

Mohamed Elneny started his youth career with Al Ahly in 1997. He left Al Ahly in 2008 to join El Mokawloon where he soon become first choice midfielder.

Elneny’s father was a youth team coach at Baladeyet Al-Mahalla in Egypt and started coaching Mo when he was only three years old.

BECOMING A CHAMPION

In January 2013, Swiss champions FC Basel invited Elneny on trial. The Egyptian starlet was handed his unofficial debut in a friendly against Steaua Bucuresti on 18 January 2013.

Having impressed on his trial, Basel signed Elneny on loan for the reminder of the season. The loan deal bringing Elneny to Switzerland was officially announced on 29 January 2013.

Mohamed Elneny was handed his official debut on 10 Feburary 2013 against Sion in the Swiss Super League. He was substituted in at the half time which Basel went on to win 3-0.

Mohamed Elneny had impressed in his short term at Basel and the Swiss champs took the option to sign him on permanent basis paying El-Mokawloon €800,000. In May 2013 – Elneny signed a four year deal at St. Jakob-Park.

After helping FC Basel win three consecutive titles and making close to 100 Swiss Super League appearances, Mohamed Elneny established himself as a key component of the team. During his time in Switzerland, Elneny came up against Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool and performed fairly well. Specially in the Champions League tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

Mohamed Elneny was arguably the best preformer for Basel in Europa League – just before moving to Arsenal, scoring twice in five appearances with passing accuracy of 92.4%, averaging 2.4 tackles per game and 2 interception per game.

GUNNING FOR GREATNESS

Arsene Wenger confirmed signing of Mohamed Elneny on 13 January 2016 after Arsenal’s 3-3 draw against Liverpool. Transfer was officially confirmed on the next day by the club for an undisclosed fee. Mohamed Elneny took jersey number 35 at Arsenal.

Elneny made his Arsenal debut against Burnley on 30 January in the fourth round of FA Cup.

Mohamed Elneny scored his first goal for Arsenal against FC Barcelona in the Round of sixteen of UEFA champions League, which was later tagged as Arsenal’s goal of the season 2015-16.

Season 2016-17 was where Mohamed Elneny developed himself into English style of playing. Mohamed Elneny didn’t have any eyebrow raising display throughout the season but he was ‘developing’ and results were seen soon. There were reports in the summer of 2017 that Arsenal are looking to offload Mohamed Elneny but nothing happened in the due course.

Season 2017-18 

Mohamed Elneny highly impressed everyone around the globe with his performances for the Gunners in 2017-18. He showed everyone the results of Wenger’s trust. Elneny became clinical with his interceptions and tackles in the defensive side of the game where as a hungry passer in the offensive one. Some of the defence splitting passes by Mohamed Elneny were talked about by the Gunners for days and days.

Mohamed Elneny scored his first goal at Emirates on 7th December 2017 against FC BATE Borisov in the group stage of Europa League. In Feburary, Elneny put up a praise worthy performance against FC Ostersunds in the first leg of Round of sixteen of Europa League and was rewarded Man Of The Match.


His commendable run of performances was awarded by a new contract with Arsenal. Elneny signed a new contract with Arsenal for long-term on 26 March 2018.
