With arrival of Edu, Arsenal’s reach in the roots of South-America (Brazil, in particular) has grown massively with the Gunners looking to unearth the next Gabriel Martinelli from much raw talented Brazilian lads.
Flamengo midfielder Gerson Santos has been an integral part of Jorge Jesus’ midfield since his arrival at Rubro-Negro last summer, helping them win the Copa Libertadores and anchoring the Rio de Jenario based club to the final of the Club World Cup.
And now Gerson Santos’ father has hinted a potential switch to North London on the cards with likes of Arsenal as well as Spurs interested.
Gerson features as a Defensive Midfielder and could rather be a cheaper alternative to Thomas Partey, who is highly linked with a move to Arsenal in recent times. The 22-year-old is known for his lung-busting stamina and his ability to dictate the tempo of play from the center of the park.
Though he is contracted with Flamengo till December 2023, a switch to England may be on the cards for the right price.
Gerson’s father, who also happens to be his agent, Marcos Santos, told Yahoo that the likes of Arsenal, their City rival – Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund are all interested in his son’s services – further claiming that Arsenal Head of Football Raul Sanllehi tried to persuade Gerson to sign for infamous La Masia during his time in Barcelona.
“Nobody knew about Arsenal, but now that I’m telling you, everyone will know,” Santos said, discussing Arsenal interest, meanwhile confirming Tottenham and Dortmund’s interest: “Everyone you mention there is true. But they have only asked.”
Arsenal have been strongly linked with number of anchoring midfielders under Arteta this summer, and Jose Mourinho is looking to replace Tanguy Ndombele or atleast get someone to compete the Frenchman. Gerson will be an ideal fit for both Arsenal as well as Tottenham.
Though How much will Gerson cost? – It still remains to be seen as Flamengo paid just £10.3million last summer bringing him in from AS Roma.
