Inter Milan keen on signing Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno in January

Defending Serie A champions Inter Milan are reportedly eyeing up a move for Bernd Leno in the January transfer window. The German shot-stopper has been replaced by summer signing Aaron Ramsdale as the No.1 keeper at Arsenal.

According to reports, Leno is now considering his future at the Emirates following Ramsdale’s arrival. It is believed that Leno is a short-term target for Inter Milan, as the Nerazzurri still have their sights firmly fixed on Ajax’s Andre Onana as a long-term replacement for Samir Handanovic.

Leno’s current contract with Arsenal expired in the summer of 2023. With just under two years left on his contract, Arsenal might consider offloading the goalkeeper in order to recoup some of the £22.5 million they paid for him in 2018.

Leno reportedly earns around £100,000 per week on his current contract with Arsenal. However, some of the fans clearly feel that the team would be better off selling Leon in January itself.

Leno started in all of the opening three Premier League games for Arsenal this season. The Gunners suffered three defeats while Leno was between the sticks. This prompted a change from Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, who then opted to start Ramsdale instead of the German.

Since Ramsdale has started in goal for Arsenal, the Gunners managed two wins in a row in the Premier League.  Leno was chosen to start for Arsenal in their recent 3-0 win against Wimbledon in the EFL Cup third round. However, Ramsdale regained his spot for the PL win over Tottenham last weekend.

It’s still unclear whether Leno will be offloaded in January, but it appears that there is some discomfort between the 29-year-old and Arteta. Prior to Ramsdale’s arrival, it was reported that Leno was unhappy that Arsenal signed a new goalkeeper in the summer. A January transfer away from North London is certainly on the cards for Leno.

Leno will want to move to a club that will offer him regular game time and he could be the man to succeed Handanovic at Inter. However, Simone Inzaghi’s side are reportedly preferring Onana over Leno. The Cameroonian has been excellent for Ajax over the past few seasons.

Although Leno has also proved himself as an incredible shot-stopper over the years, he has been prone to the occasional error.
