Arsenal will welcome Portuguese outfit Vitoria Guimaraes to the Emirates Stadium for tonight’s Europa League clash. And prior to the match Vitoria manager, Ivo Vieira said, he would be presenting Unai Emery with bottle of Portuguese wine when the two sides meet for the second leg in the Europa League in 13 days time.
“I did not have this opportunity,” explained Vitoria’s coach when asked if he would be performing this ritual at the Emirates.
“I am Madeiran, like our translator, John. I did not bring it to London, but when Unai Emery is there [in Portugal], there will be one at the club.”
All apparently goes back to when Jose Mourinho offered wine to Sir Alex Ferguson, and since the Portuguese clubs have felt obligated to give their English opponents a sample of local wine.
